Rimmel says the lip lacquers are neither a lipstick nor a lip gloss; to that I say hosh-posh. It isn't a lip stick and it isn't a lip gloss...then what could it be?
THE PACKAGING
The overall size of the packaging is rather standard as a lip gloss would go. It is light weight, durable, and functional. The applicator is a twist on which helps to ensure it will stay shut properly in your bag, unlike some lipstick packaging. The only thing that could be an issue over time is that the writing on the tube will wear off as it rubs against something. If that isn't a concern to you, then no worries!
THE BRUSH
The applicator tip holds a decent amount of product and is sturdy which helps make it easier to apply the product on your lips. What I like about this kind of applicator is that there are not any bristles to get tweaked over time which helps ensure your application a few months down the line won't be effected.
SWATCHES & APPLICATION
This is a warm toned coral that is more pink than orange. When I think of the 80's, this is the exact color of coral I always think of. I can see what Rimmel means when they say this isn't quite a lip gloss not a lip stick. A typical drug store lip gloss is shinier and less opaque in its final product than the Rimmel Lip Lacquer, but it has a thinner viscosity, or thickness, than a lip stick usually does. In the swatches above the first stripe on the left was one swipe of the product. The second stripe is two overlapping swipes of the product and the third stripe is like five swipes of the product overlapping. As you can see, the opacity or the lacquer does not really change much whether you apply one coat or five coats. To me this can be a good or a bad thing. If you like the color of a gloss I like the ability to build the product to show as little or as much of the color as I like. This this product it is pretty one note unless you were to mix it with a clear gloss to thin it out. Now, if you are a no fuss kind of person and what you bought is that you plan to get then this could very well be the product for you; one quick application will give you the same color every time.
THE CALCULATIONS
Local stores sell this for around $5.99 per tube.
THE VERDICT
This is a decent product for the price point and easily accessible at many drug stores. The product lives up to what it is branded as - neither a lip gloss fully or a lip stick fully. As for the color selection available, it looks like a good majority of the colors are cool toned so they may not be as glorious on warm toned complexions which is a bummer. Would I repurchase though? Personally I would probably pass on buying this again unless I was in a pinch. I like the choice to build my colors with glosses and create dimension but this product for me just doesn't do that.
